13 Of The Most Valuable Jewels In the World - 7th The Gaff Pink Diamond
Perfection Is Made Not Born
Tickled Pink
How do you improve a 24.78 carat potentially flawless vivid pink diamond? Well, apparently a lot according to Laurence Gaff who purchased the stunning stone at a Swiss Sotheby's auction in November 2010 for $46 million. Gaff had a vision for the diamond to make it even more flawless and beautiful than ever.
Before Gaff "The King of Bling" acquired the rare stone it sat in Harry Winston's private collection for more than 60 years.
The Gemological Institute of America graded the Graff Pink as a Type IIa diamond - meaning it fell in the top 1 to 2 percent of diamonds in terms of purity, according to Diamondland.
Labor Of Love
After weeks of meticulous work and pressure of the enormous risks to refurbish the diamond a near flawless diamond emerges. All of the grading qualities were improved including the color and clarity. The methods used to achieve such inconceivable goals remain trade secrets to this day. Even more impressive, is that the entire update to the stone took less than a carat away from the original stone. The newly cut stone has yet to go to auction so there is no official record of the current value but many experts expect that the fetching price will break records.
