14k Five Pearl Hoop Earrings with Pearl Drop
These 14k Five Pearl Hoop Earrings with Pearl Drop are handmade by Andrea Li: solid 14k post hoop earrings with a delicate chain attached to ear nut, ten Akoya 3mm grade AA pearls, and two freshwater 8–8.4mm grade-A pearls. Total length 3½″, hoop diameter 1¼″. Part of Aglow, her modular collection of barely-there, gilded pieces built to be layered and lived in.
The design runs in two layers. The hoop itself is solid 14k, clean and unadorned, with a diameter that sits comfortably at the lobe rather than commanding it. From the ear nut, a delicate chain trails ten Akoya pearls, each one 3mm and grade AA, which is the saltwater grade known for its sharp, mirror-bright luster, the kind you only see in Akoya and never in anything mass-produced. The chain ends in a pair of freshwater pearls at 8 to 8.4mm, grade-A, chosen for their size and even, rounded surface. The two pearl types belong in the same pair because they are doing different things: the Akoya chain brings brilliance, the freshwater drops bring weight and presence.
Pearls are soft, around 2.5 to 3 on the Mohs scale, and I work with them as the last element I seat at the bench. For everyday wear, the same logic applies: put these on after lotion and perfume, take them off first, wipe the pearls gently with a soft cloth before storing. That routine keeps nacre bright and keeps the luster you see on this page the luster you see a decade from now.
