Hamada Hoop Necklace
The Hamada Hoop Necklace is handmade by Andrea Li in her Denver studio: 14K gold-filled hand-fabricated arch and open circle frames on a 14K gold-filled chain and clasp, with a hand-bailed green rutilated gemstone chain and three pendants -- large lodalite, a flat pear briolette, and a green rutilated long teardrop briolette. Necklace length is 15 inches with a 4-inch extender chain; pendant length 4 inches.
The open circle frames are hand-fabricated, not cast -- the geometry comes from bending and shaping the metal at the bench. The stone drops are cold-connected, assembled with wire and never with heat. Cold connection is how I work with briolettes: they're drilled through their narrowest point, which is also the most brittle, so introducing heat or pressure there risks fracturing the stone. Instead, I work each hole individually, fitting the wire to the drill opening so the stone hangs securely without any clamping force on it.
Lodalite is a variety of clear quartz that encloses mineral inclusions inside -- mossy greens, amber wisps, tiny landscapes frozen in the crystal. No two lodalite pendants contain the same scene. The green rutilated stones carry a different kind of interior life: copper-toned or silver needle-like rutile crystals running through the quartz, visible from every angle as the piece moves.
