Fancy Cut Tourmaline and Solid 18k Gold Necklace
The Fancy Cut Tourmaline and Solid 18k Gold Necklace is handmade by Andrea Li in her Denver studio: 348 carats of fancy cut graduated AAA quality watermelon tourmalines strung to a graduated sweep, finished with solid 18k gold accent beads and a solid 18k gold clasp.
Watermelon tourmaline shows green at the edge and pink at the core, and this necklace was built to let that color movement read across the full length of the piece. The fancy cut stones catch light from every facet. The graduation is deliberate - largest at center, stepping down toward the shoulders - so the necklace drapes with its own weight and settles into the body rather than sitting flat against it. Necklace length is 18 inches. From the widest point at the pendant drop, the piece measures 1 1/2 inches top to bottom.
The accent beads and clasp are solid 18k gold, not plated, not filled. At this scale and with these stones, only solid gold reads correctly. Every other material choice would compete with the tourmalines or quietly undercut them.
This is cold-connected assembly - the stones and metal elements are brought together without heat. Heat warps the color in the most sensitive tourmalines, so the cold-connection approach is both a technical requirement and a quality decision. Each bead and each stone is positioned by hand.
