This 14k gold-filled 2 pearl choker is handmade by Andrea Li: a hand-fabricated 12 gauge 14k gold-filled choker with two freshwater 9-10mm grade-A pearls. It is part of Aglow, her collection of gilded, collectible pieces built for the wearer who wants something that reads as jewelry, not an accessory.

Two 9-10mm grade-A pearls sit on a hand-formed 12 gauge 14k gold-filled choker band, each pearl chosen for the qualities that read as quality up close: a clean, rounded surface and genuine luster. At this size, the pearls lead. The gold gives them a frame that holds its own.

Freshwater pearls are soft, around 2.5 to 3 on the Mohs scale, and a choker sits at the neck where it meets more contact than you might expect from daily wear. I choose grade-A because the surface quality holds its luster longer, and I work with them as the last element I seat, after everything structural is in place. Put the choker on after perfume and lotion, store it on its own, and the nacre will stay bright for years.

Is 14k gold-filled real gold?
Yes, in the sense that counts for wear. Gold-filled has a genuine layer of 14k gold mechanically bonded to a base metal core, which is far thicker than gold plating and will not flake or rub off with normal wear. Andrea works in 14k gold-filled, solid 14k, and sterling silver; for this choker she chose 14k gold-filled because it holds its finish through daily contact.
How do I care for pearls?
Pearls are soft, around 2.5 to 3 on the Mohs scale, so they ask for a little care. Put the choker on last, after perfume and lotion, and take it off first. Store it on its own so nothing scratches the nacre surface. Kept this way, grade-A freshwater pearls hold their luster for years.

This Sculptural Gold Illusion Three Pearl Choker is handmade by Andrea Li: a hand-fabricated 14k gold-filled modern choker frame with high-luster 8.4mm freshwater pearls accents that appear to float at the collar with no visible means of support.

The choker measures 10 total inches in length at half diameter. The spring of the heavy-gauge wire is what makes it work: it opens just enough to slide on and off, then springs back to hug the curves of your neck and hold its position without a clasp. The three pearls are placed where the eye lands first, spaced so each reads clearly against skin rather than clustering. It is the kind of piece that looks like it took engineering to figure out, because it did.

I work with high-luster freshwater pearls because luster is the quality that holds up over years of wear, and these are positioned close to the skin where the surface finishes the whole effect. Pearls are soft, around 2.5 to 3 on the Mohs scale, so I keep them away from perfume, lotion, and hairspray, wipe with a soft cloth after wearing, and store flat rather than tossed in with harder stones. Wear this choker last when you are getting ready, and it will stay beautiful.
