Grade-A freshwater pearls are chosen for luster and consistency of surface, the qualities that separate a pearl worth looking at up close from one that gets lost in the crowd. Because pearls are soft, around 2.5 to 3 on the Mohs scale, I apply them last in my process, after any metal forming is complete, so the nacre surface never gets near heat or abrasion.
