Aura Rainbow Moonstone Choker

Aura Rainbow Moonstone Choker
This is Aura, a one-of-a-kind rainbow moonstone choker made to float at the base of the neck. It started with a strand of AAAA rainbow moonstone marquise briolettes I couldn't stop turning over in the light. Rainbow moonstone is actually a variety of labradorite, and the inner glow the trade calls its aura, or adularescence, is light scattering between microscopic layers of feldspar inside the stone, throwing back blues, yellows, oranges and purples as it moves.
The marquise stones read like soft spikes, so I paired them with a few bullet-cut moonstones left over from my Femme Fatale collection and built the cluster to twist up one side of the choker like a vine. Around that center I set a quiet chorus of coordinating stones: shield-cut aquamarine, crown-cut mixed beryl of aquamarine, morganite and heliodor, morganite and aquamarine briolettes, kunzite, mystic quartz, and tiny sapphires and Herkimer diamonds tucked in for depth. A single luminous baroque Akoya pearl caps the front on a soldered peg, with Japanese Akoya Keshi and small grey pearls threaded through. The base is fabricated from 14k gold-filled heavy-gauge wire.
I left the opposite side deliberately bare. That restraint, worked out at the bench by Andrea Li, is the whole point: it lets the cluster float and gives the piece a modern, architectural line instead of a busy one. Aura is built once and never repeated, made by hand in my Denver studio. This exact cluster is assembled a single time and then it's gone, so when it finds you, you're the only one wearing it. It sits high and light, so it works as easily over a white tee on a Tuesday as it does above a silk slip for an evening out, and a bare neckline lets the moonstone do the talking.
The pink, purple, orange and blue gray Herkimer diamonds in this piece get their color from a thin coating on the surface, not from the crystal itself. Coatings can wear with time and friction, so clean them gently with a soft cloth and keep them away from ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals.
Circumference / Length: The full measurement of the choker: 15 inches

From the bench
The base is hand-fabricated from heavy-gauge 14k gold-filled wire, shaped to sit close around the neck, with the cluster wound up one side so it floats rather than centers.
The AAAA rainbow moonstone marquise briolettes are paired with bullet-cut moonstones left over from my Femme Fatale collection, whose pointed silhouette echoed the new stones exactly.
Rainbow moonstone is a variety of labradorite, and the glow the trade calls adularescence is light scattering between microscopic layers inside the stone.

What is rainbow moonstone?
Rainbow moonstone is a variety of labradorite. The floating glow the trade calls its aura, or adularescence, is light scattering between microscopic layers of feldspar inside the stone, which throws back flashes of blue, orange and purple as it moves. Each stone in Aura was chosen for that glow. You can read more in my moonstone gemstone guide.
Is this choker one of a kind?
Yes. Aura is one of a kind, built once and never repeated. I fabricated it by hand in my Denver studio around a single strand of AAAA rainbow moonstone, so no other choker will carry this exact cluster.
Are there matching earrings?
Yes. The Aura Earrings are the coordinating mate, built on a gilded arch with a single bullet-cut moonstone, so the pair reads as one intentional look worn together or apart.
How do I care for moonstone?
Moonstone is softer than quartz (about 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale), so store Aura on its own away from harder pieces, keep it clear of chemicals and knocks, and wipe it with a soft dry cloth. Treated gently, the adularescence stays bright for a lifetime.
