Baroque Pearl Drop Pendant Gold-Filled Necklace
This Baroque Pearl Drop Pendant Gold-Filled Necklace is handmade by Andrea Li: Freshwater baroque pearls (grown two years for thick lustrous nacre) suspended from a hand-fabricated 12 gauge 14K gold-filled wire circle with a diameter of 2″, on a gold-filled chain drop. Pendant length 11″; total necklace length 36″. It is part of Aglow, her modular collection of barely-there, naked jewelry meant to be stacked, layered, and lived in.
Baroque pearls are the irregular ones, each shaped differently by the way the oyster grew around the nucleus over two full years of cultivation. That growth time is not decorative language. Thick nacre is what gives a pearl its depth of luster, the quality that separates a piece from the surface and makes it glow rather than shine. The 2″ 14K gold-filled wire circle is fabricated entirely by hand in the studio, shaped and finished before the pearls are set.
Pearls are soft, around 2.5 to 3 on the Mohs scale, and they ask for a little care: put this on after lotion and perfume, store it separately from harder stones, and wipe it gently after wearing. Treated that way, the nacre holds its depth and the gold-filled components keep their warmth for years of real wear.
