The piece moves the way a multi-strand piece should, with each layer carrying its own weight and rhythm. The freshwater pearl strands give the necklace its warmth; the fancy twist cut quartz briolettes catch light at unexpected angles; the Swarovski crystal accents sharpen the whole composition. The 14K gold-filled wire and beaded details tie the elements together without overwhelming them, letting the stones do the work. Freshwater pearls are among the most forgiving gemstones to wear, but they do benefit from a little care. I wipe pearl pieces down with a soft, dry cloth after each wear and store them on their own, away from harder stones that can scratch the nacre. This Multi Strand Pearl Collar Necklace is handmade by Andrea Li in her Denver studio: a layered, reversible collar built from a curated selection of various vintage jewelry components and vintage rhinestone flourishes, anchored by a 3-D printed 24k gold plated starburst center pendant on the back detail.

The front presents cascading pearl strands with the particular weight and warmth only vintage finds carry. The cascading back detail gives the necklace a second life worn reversed, with the starburst pendant as the focal point, so the piece reads entirely differently depending on which side you choose to show. Necklace length is 21 inches; the back flourish is 7 inches. This is a modern collar for someone who wants to wear something that has already lived.

Pearls are among the softer materials in any jewelry collection, around 2.5 to 3 on the Mohs scale, and vintage pearls ask for a little more care than a stone would.
