Alpenglow Pink Kunzite Necklace

Alpenglow Pink Kunzite Necklace
Alpenglow is a one-of-a-kind pink kunzite necklace, hand-fabricated in 14k gold-filled by Andrea Li in her Denver studio.
The center is a large, smooth pink kunzite, seated into a folded 24k gold vermeil crescent rather than hung from the chain. The stone carries a single drill hole at its slimmest point, so the crescent cradles it and anchors it in three places instead of one. A line of tiny mystic labradorite sweeps across the stone in an arch.
The five large link shapes were bent by hand on a jig from 12-gauge 14k gold-filled wire, then soldered closed, polished to a high shine, and drilled at every anchor point before a single stone went near them. Clusters above and below the kunzite carry kunzite pear briolettes, clear and opaque pink sapphires, purple sapphires, lavender quartz, morganite briolettes, moonstone rondelles, and Japanese Akoya keshi pearls. One large baroque pearl hangs below the lower cluster, with two lavender keshi freshwater pearls dropping beneath it. A simple-cut aquamarine sits between each pair of links, clustered with sapphires above and below so it cannot spin on its wire.
It wears as a statement piece over a plain neckline, and it coordinates with the Alpenglow Pale Amethyst Link Bracelet, formed on the same jig from the same wire.
Alpenglow is the pink light that stays on the mountains after the sun has gone down behind them. That is the color of this stone. It was built once and will not be repeated. Part of the Second Light Collection.
Necklace Length vs. Drop
Circumference / Length: The full measurement of the chain or strand from end to end (including the clasp): 17 inches
Drop: How far the necklace hangs down onto your chest: 5 inches

From the bench
The link shapes are formed on a metal wire-bending jig with adjustable dies, from 12-gauge 14k gold-filled wire, so the curves come out smooth rather than approximately round.
The kunzite is set into a folded 24k gold vermeil crescent, and between each pair of shapes sits a simple-cut aquamarine on a gold-filled head pin.
Kunzite is the pink to lilac variety of spodumene at 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, so it wants to be worn rather than knocked about.
What kunzite actually looks like up close| Alpenglow | Typical alternative | |
|---|---|---|
| Center stone | Large smooth pink kunzite, seated into a folded 24k gold vermeil crescent because the stone carries only one drill hole | Faceted pink stone hung from a jump ring |
| Metal | 14k gold-filled throughout, with a 24k gold vermeil setting crescent | Gold-plated base metal |
| Links | Five shapes hand-bent on a jig, soldered closed, polished and drilled | Purchased chain |
| Setting | Sapphire clusters above and below each stone, so nothing rotates on its wire | Beads strung loose, free to spin |
| Construction | One of a kind, hand-built in Denver; built once, never repeated | Mass-produced and repeated |
What is kunzite?
Kunzite is the pink to lilac variety of spodumene, colored by traces of manganese, and it sits at 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. It is named after George Frederick Kunz, the Tiffany and Co. gemologist who first described it in 1902.
Is this necklace one of a kind?
Yes. Alpenglow was built once and will not be repeated. The five link shapes were bent, soldered, polished and drilled by hand in Andrea Li's Denver studio, and the cluster was built around this particular kunzite.
How do I care for kunzite?
Kunzite fades with prolonged exposure to strong light and heat, so wear it and then store it away from a sunny windowsill. Clean it with a soft cloth and mild soapy water only, never an ultrasonic or steam cleaner.
Does it pair with the bracelet?
Yes. The Alpenglow Pale Amethyst Link Bracelet is its companion, formed on the same bending jig from the same 12-gauge 14k gold-filled wire. The necklace leads with pink kunzite and the bracelet with pale amethyst, so they share a hand without competing.
