Fairy Dynamite Opal Earrings

Fairy Dynamite Opal Earrings
These are the Fairy Dynamite Earrings, one-of-a-kind Australian opal cluster earrings built to hold a little chaos inside a polished frame.
Each one hangs from a teardrop aquamarine flat briolette that anchors the drop and gives it a clean finish, a quiet start before the cluster beneath it breaks open. Below that I stacked Australian opals alongside crown-cut mixed beryl, aquamarine and morganite and heliodor faceted into the same geometric shape. The pearls come from the same hand-bailed pearl chain that runs through the Fairy Dynamite necklace. That repetition is deliberate. The earrings are the necklace's echo, not an afterthought.
Australian opal shifts its play-of-color with every tilt of the head, orange to green to an almost electric blue, and no two stones flash the same sequence. The beryl crown cuts catch what comes through the opal and return it differently. The pearls keep the cluster from going loud.
The aquamarine drop sits steady while the cluster beneath it moves. That is what gives them their live quality without any weight. On their own they make a simple outfit feel considered. Next to the necklace, they become the thing people ask about.
All wire is 14k gold-filled. I built this exact cluster by hand, and it will not be built again. Made by Andrea Li in her Denver studio.

From the bench
Each earring hangs from a teardrop aquamarine flat briolette that anchors the drop, with Australian opals stacked below it alongside crown-cut mixed beryl, aquamarine and morganite and heliodor together.
The pearls come from the same hand-bailed pearl chain that runs through the Fairy Dynamite necklace, which is deliberate rather than convenient.
Australian opal is one of the most light-responsive stones there is, so these change through the day as you move.
Why these echo the necklace that named it| Fairy Dynamite Earrings | Typical alternative | |

| Center stone | Australian opal, natural play-of-color | Synthetic opal or dyed simulant |
| Metal | 14k gold-filled, hand-fabricated | Gold-plated base metal |
| Construction | One of a kind, hand-built in Denver; built once, never repeated | Mass-produced, repeated |
| Focal detail | Teardrop aquamarine flat briolette anchor at the top of each drop | Plain wire or jump ring |
| Cluster | Stacked opal, crown-cut mixed beryl (aquamarine, morganite, heliodor), and hand-bailed pearls | Single stone or uniform strand |
| Set partner | Coordinates with the Fairy Dynamite necklace (sold separately) as a complete look | No coordinating piece |
What makes Australian opal unique?
Australian opal is one of the few gemstones that produces true play-of-color -- flashes of shifting light that move as the stone does. The color you see is caused by the diffraction of light through tiny silica spheres arranged in a regular grid inside the stone; different sphere sizes produce different colors, and no two stones ever flash the same sequence. Because opal is formed from silica gel rather than crystallizing under heat, it holds up to about 6 on the Mohs hardness scale, which is why I build earrings like these on a secure anchor and away from hard edges. You can read more in my opal gemstone guide.
Are these earrings one of a kind?
Yes. I built this exact cluster by hand in my Denver studio, and these earrings exist once. When they find you, you're the only one wearing this particular combination of opal, beryl, and pearls -- no other pair carries this cluster.
Do these come with a matching necklace?
Yes. The Fairy Dynamite necklace is the coordinating mate in this set, using the same stacked Australian opal clustering and pearl chain that the earrings echo. They wear together as a complete look or separately as individual pieces.
How do I care for opal earrings?
Australian opal contains a small amount of water in its structure, so store these away from prolonged dry heat or direct sunlight. Keep them clear of chemicals (perfume, hairspray, cleaning products) and remove them before swimming. Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing. The aquamarine and beryl in the cluster are harder than opal, so no special handling -- just the standard opal-first precautions.
