A custom necklace and earrings for an aunt of the bride who found Andrea Li during a midnight Google search

Autumn found me the way a lot of my favorite clients do, late at night, searching for something she couldn't find anywhere else.

She'd Googled "statement necklace" and "tourmaline," scrolled through the image results, and landed on my site. When she saw the pieces, she was hooked. She couldn't find any stores that carried my work, so she reached out through the website inquiry form. We were emailing each other into the night.

Her niece was getting married on May 11th at a beachside resort on the Jersey Shore. Autumn had her dress, a beautiful piece with a lot of black and jewel-toned colors in the pattern. She knew she wanted statement jewelry, not minimal. But she wasn't sure what would work.

That's when the collaboration started.

Knowing what she wanted and what she didn't

Autumn was specific from the start. She wanted blues, greens, and turquoise to brighten up the black in her dress. Gold, not silver. A necklace at least 20 inches, she's not a fan of short necklaces. Statement pieces, not minimal.

She combed through my website and found the style she was drawn to: the spikey, textured look of one of my collections. She asked if I could create a similar necklace and earrings in the bright colors she loved, pulling from the vibrant blues and greens of the tourmaline hoop chandelier earrings she'd spotted.

I told her we absolutely could, and that due to the organic nature of my gemstone clustering, her pieces wouldn't be exact replicas, but we'd get the spirit right.

The details that matter

Autumn came prepared with specifics that made the design process smoother:

She wanted a lobster clasp instead of an open hook, "so I don't lose the necklace." Lever-back closures on the earrings instead of fishhooks, "so I don't lose the earrings." A 19-inch chain with a 2-inch extender. The largest stone in the earrings should be a brighter blue "to add some color to my face." Her budget: $800, including tax and shipping.

She also mentioned one thing to avoid: no black stones. Her dress already had plenty of black. The jewelry needed to be the counterpoint, dazzling blues and greens against the dark pattern.

These kinds of specifics aren't demanding. They're a gift. When a client tells you exactly what she needs from a functional standpoint, the designer can focus entirely on making it beautiful.

Swiss Blue Topaz and golden spikes

I chose Swiss Blue Topaz as the hero stone, that bright, electric blue that lights up against both black fabric and natural gray hair (Autumn had mentioned this with a laugh in her first email, and she was absolutely right to think about it). London Blue Topaz for depth. Touches of peridot for the green she wanted. All set in 24k gold vermeil over sterling silver with 14k gold-filled wire and those signature hammered gold spikes that had caught her eye in the first place.

The pieces came together as a matched set, a necklace with gemstone clustering at the center cascading into golden spikes, and earrings with bright Swiss Blue Topaz drops anchoring the same spike movement.

One behind-the-scenes detail: the 18k vermeil spikes I thought I had in inventory had to be reordered, and the price had gone up 45% since my last purchase due to rising metal markets. I honored the original budget we'd agreed on. That's how it should work; the client shouldn't absorb a cost increase that happened after the handshake.

"Dazzling blues and greens, and waves of golden movement"

When Autumn received the pieces, her response was immediate: "The earrings and necklace are SPECTACULAR! They really brighten up my whole look!"

She wore them to the beachside wedding on May 11th. In the photos, the blues and greens catch the light against her upswept silver hair, the golden spikes moving with her, exactly the effect she'd imagined when she was searching at midnight.

Her review captured it perfectly: "Andrea took the time to learn about the event, my dress, and what I envisioned. It was pure magic and talent how she created my necklace and earrings. She elevated my look for the big day with dazzling blues and greens, and waves of golden movement that mirrored the ocean tide."

Waves of golden movement that mirrored the ocean tide at a beachside wedding. That's the kind of detail a client notices that a designer can only hope for.

The search that started it all

After the wedding, I asked Autumn how she'd found my website. Her answer: "I found your website when I Googled statement necklace, and I believe tourmaline was in there too. I just looked at images for the search and went from there. When I saw the pictures of your work, I just loved the freeform, organic nature, and the different textures of everything."

That's the power of having your work visible where people are searching. Autumn wasn't looking for me specifically. She was looking for a feeling, bold, colorful, and organic, and my work showed up in the image results. The rest happened because the website was there to catch her when she clicked.

The pieces: Custom statement necklace + matching earrings, 24k gold vermeil, 14k gold-filled components, Swiss Blue Topaz, London Blue Topaz, peridot, hammered gold spikes. The timeline: Commission to delivery in approximately 3 weeks. The occasion: Niece's beachside wedding, Jersey Shore (aunt of the bride)
